I Lack It I Like It - Ingrid Berthon-Moine

Words by Sabrina Garnier

Based in west London Ingrid’s studio is a quaint little space, filled with a collection of phallic paraphernalia amongst the art supplies and artworks.

I had the pleasure of meeting artist Ingrid Berthon-Moine, explore her studio and talk about her recent artworks and upcoming projects. Inside the studio, there’s a unique embrace of pliable flaccid shapes of all shapes and sizes presented in drawings, photography and sculptures.

Juxtaposition of phallic erected cityscape and the pliable flaccid penis reflects the lack of discourse of masculine imagery in modern society.

‘Looking At a Lack of Perspective’

Ingrid's exhibition featured a cut-out photograph, where the erected towers of the financial district and the model’s limp penis are on the tip of the artists finger between the eyes and gaze. Ingrid takes on the role of the female voyeur.

Ingrid Berthon-Moine's reversal gaze reflects the lack of discourse surrounding masculinity and highlights the absurdity of patriarchal standards.

John Berger:

'Men look at women, and women watch themselves being looked at.'

Berthon-Moine creates art that reflects gender inequality and abuse of power. Her work echoes with online movements such as #metoo and #notsurprised  which have recently hit the art world’s social media.

"Do I lack it? Do I like it?"

‘I like it I lack it’ Is a response to the visual culture we are used to today.

Berthon-Moine, depicts sex and nudity in a ludic & humorous way, while still highlighting issues with gender and sexualised nudity. Through visual puns, Berthon-Moine points out the absurdities of the stereotypes that are a product of patriarchal ideals.
